In Dagestan, there is a living legend about the first pot maker named Kalkuchchi. One day, the poor man sat on a lakeshore brooding on how to move on. All of a sudden he saw kids making something out of lakeside clay. Kalkuchchi decided to mould something too. A beautiful jar made by his hands gave rise to the well-known Balkhar handicraft. Having mastered the art of pottery-making, Kalkuchchi taught his fellow villagers but for some reason it was women who made the most beautiful and elegant jars.
